The second pivotal benchmark we ran was the “Contradiction Resolution” test. We presented the AI with a chat log containing a red herring:
When we ran a “Simple Dredge” (Implicit Bridge) asking for the root cause, the model returned: "Auth: timeout".
It failed completely. It grabbed the first plausible error it found and stopped. It prioritized speed (generating the first token) over correctness (reading the whole context). This is the Axiom of Laziness: “In the absence of a forced reasoning step, a model will behave like an autocomplete engine, not a logic engine.”
LLMs are probabilistic machines designed to minimize “Perplexity” (surprise). The path of least resistance is often the path of least computation.
When we presented a simple pattern: FAILURE_COMPONENT: [SLOT], we gave the model a “Fast Exit.” The moment it saw the word “Auth” in the context, the statistical probability of putting “Auth” into the slot spiked. It didn’t “read ahead” to see that Bob refuted Alice. It just filled the blank.
This is the danger of “Code Golf” patterns without safety rails. By demanding brevity (1-3 words), we inadvertently encouraged the model to skip the complex synthesis required to find the true answer buried at the end.
We initially built an “Implicit Bridge” feature—automatically upgrading simple queries like “What is the error?” into dense molds.
Our benchmark proved this is dangerous. For simple facts (“What is the date?”), it works beautifully (19 chars vs 94 chars). But for reasoning, the Implicit Bridge strips away the “Thinking Time.” It removes the conversational buffer (“Let me analyze the logs…”) that the model needs to actually perform the logic.
An Implicit Bridge is a “Cognitive Shortcut.” If the terrain is tricky (contradictions, nuance), the shortcut leads off a cliff.
We must understand that an LLM operates in two distinct modes:
Dredging (Subtractive Prompting) pushes the model heavily toward Autocomplete Mode. We are essentially turning the LLM into a super-powered RegEx. This is fantastic for extraction but fatal for analysis.
The Axiom of Laziness dictates that Density and Reasoning are inversely correlated unless we mechanically intervene. You cannot have “Fast, Dense, and Smart” all at once—unless you build a specific architecture to support it.
